I Can Get It for You Wholesale

Curiosity Killed the Cat
This film is a real curiosity: it's a sharp, cynical comedy about the fashion industry in New York City. The reason it's a curiosity is that, from the credits (Abraham Polonsky wrote the script, from Jerome Weidman's novel; the movie's stars include Susan Hayward, George Sanders and Sam Jaffe), you would expect a film noir. (And there were film noirs that were set in the fashion industry: THE GARMENT JUNGLE is an example.) But here, the hard-edged dialogue delights in barbed repartee, the action is fast, and the actors perform with high energy, turning the machinations of the plot into an intricate weave of rapid-fire patterns which become as stylized as the entrances-and-exits of a boudoir farce.

This was the third major script that Polonsky wrote set in New York City: the other two are BODY AND SOUL (directed by Robert Rossen) and his self-directed FORCE OF EVIL. Michael Gordon's direction is smoother and much less personal than Rossen or Polonsky himself, which also...

Typical Susan Hayward vehicle
This is a good movie, holds your interest. Good cast and, as usual, shows the great Susan Hayward in a film made for her talent. A must for any Hayward fan. I saw the musical version on Broadway in 1962 with Barbra Streisand making her Broadway debut.

Ok
Susan Hayward is bigger than life. She fills the screen with her beauty and fire.
I found, in the end, that the tile is misleading; I expected so much more from the story.

Vampire Dog

Family Friendly Fare That Lacks Much Bite: A Cute Premise That's Never Fully Explored
I guess I need to be wary of movies that use the word "dog" in their titles, it just might represent truth in advertising! What do you think about when you hear "Vampire Dog?" Right away, I conjured dozens of wacky sight gags, silly puns, and ridiculous spoofs. Just the notion of this dog having vampiric tendencies (even comical ones) opens up a myriad of mental images and potentially humorous situations. The problem with "Vampire Dog" is that its screenplay is so lazy, it never makes a convincing argument that Fang (the doggie in question, voiced by Norm MacDonald) is supernatural or even special. It cracks wise, to be sure, but is never particularly funny. What makes it a vampire exactly? Apparently it's very old, comes from Transylvania, moves like lightning, and consumes red jelly (this is actually Jello, but I guess they couldn't afford brand royalties). That's the back story of Fang in a nutshell.

Fang is taken in by an awkward youth (Collin MacKechnie). The primary...

Fun movie!
I have an 8-year-old who just loves this movie. It's entertaining and funny in an age-appropriate way. No blood or violence. The "vampire" dog needs cherry jelly to survive! Cute.

Great movie for the whole family.
This is a great family movie. Younger kids will enjoy. Parents can watch this with their kids and not have to worry about any bad or inappropriate content. Just a cute, funny, and all around good clean movie. I'm glad I bought it. I told over families about the movie and they have all said they and their kids liked it.

Tim Marlow With Gilbert & George

Kinda Stuffy and British
Everyone says the Pet Shop Boys are the "Gilbert and George of pop music," however, no one has said G&G are the PBB of material art, for some reason. With PSB, Neil does most of the talking and Chris is selectively mute. With G&G, both speak for an equal amount of time, even as one of them speaks English as a second language. Both groups don't do 100% to identify as gay artists. Both groups, admirably, seem to embrace multiculturalism.
Still, you might have to be a hardcore fan of G&G to like this disc. For novices, it's doesn't speak about where they grew up, how was art school for them, etc. It's just a one-hour Q&A while they walk through a gallery hosting their retrospective. If you don't like intellectual jerking regarding modern art, this may bore you to tears.
Some of the stuff they say just doesn't make sense. They try to say they don't show women in their art because they are feminist. How does ignoring women make you a feminist!? They are right that much...

"One artist, two people" Fascinating look into the art and intellect of Gilbert and George.

Impressive feature on artistic duo
Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to see this major exhibition while it was at the Tate Modern but Tim Marlow with Gilbert & George does an impressive job of brining it to the screen. Not for the faint hearted some of the work is quite provocative if not a bit gross!

Man Of Vendetta

A Great South Korean Thriller... Very Entertaining...
Joo Young-Soo (Kim Myung-min), a father and a pastor, is currently negotiating with his daughter's kidnapper. When the kidnapper notices the police presence, he cancels the deal and disappears with Young-Soo's daughter. 8 years later, Young-Soo has given up his life as a pastor as well as his beliefs, while his wife continues searching for their lost daughter. Eventually, his daughter and her kidnapper reemerge, and Young-Soo plans on saving his daughter... without the police.

The story in this film is great. It's not completely original - but it manages to entertain immensely, despite that fact. Much of the movie plays out as a game of cat and mouse between Young-Soo and the kidnapper. Throughout the story, Young-Soo goes through hell to save his daughter - making heartbreaking choices and fighting through the physical and emotional pain. The ending of the film is bittersweet, definitely makes you look back at this journey. However, there are a few scenes in the film that...

Dave [Blu-ray]

Whimsy & Intrigue in the White House
This movie is one of those gems that quietly grows on you -- each viewing creating anticipation and appreciation for its wit and style. The casting is superb. Kevin Kline doesn't know how to give a bad performance. Frank Langella's brilliant characterization of the ambitious, power-hungry 'man behind the throne' is perfect, and a wonderful contrast to his long-ago role as the cad/seducer in Diary of a Mad Housewife.

This is definitely a movie to buy because it needs to be seen many times. The innumerable funny pearls in this movie alone are worth the price of the DVD. For Minnesotans, one of the slyest gags was Dave's gig early in the moview, imitating the President at the grand opening of Durenberger Motors in his home town. The movie was released around the time that David Durenberger (Minnesota's senior senator) was embroiled in an ethics scandal. A personal favorite moment was the scene where Dave (with the help of his accountant buddy played by Charles Grodin)...

A Washington fantasy, full of idealism and fun
Every time I watch this movie (more often now that it is an election year) I am amazed that the implausibility of it doesn't bother me. But it doesn't. Ivan Reitman manages to bring together an impressive group of actors and makes every character on the screen seem real. Kevin Kline is his usual remarkable self, a chameleon playing an idealistic Presidential look-alike swept into national politics. Sigourney Weaver is as warm and interesting as I have ever seen her in movies. Together they are like two children sharing a secret. Watch, for example, the pause at the top of the stairs when they return to the White House after their near-escape.

But my greatest admiration is for Reitman who gives every character in this movie a chance to shine. Charles Grodin being seduced by the promise of bratwurst. Ving Rhames discussing how he looks in a sweater. Ben Kingsley becoming nostalgic about how a shoe salesman became Vice President. Frank Langella humming Hail to the Chief...

Cathartic American (Hollywood) Dream
How do you solve a potentially explosive scandal, solve all the world's problems, and get rid of the greed and corruption in the White House? Well, you make an affable liberal actor take the President's place of course!

Kevin Kline plays Dave, an affable temp agency owner who on his off-time likes to do small event impersonations of the President. As for his luck, he strikes an uncanny resemblance, a la the Prince and the Pauper, and is found by the Secret Service to be an ideal candidate for a decoy body while the President is off doing... confidential things.

However, when the real President has a stroke, his advisors don't want to set off a national emergency... especially with a liberal vice-president around to think about. Thus they move Dave in a la The Hudsucker Proxy as the new President... but of course, Dave has a warm heart and an inspiration to try his hardest at everything he does, so... he goes at his job with the energy, charisma, and skill...

Nightscape: Dark Reign of Thanatos

Shane
This is cut out of the same piece of cloth as the Hobbit. Being a big Tolkien fan from way back I really appreciated this indie flick. Looking forward to more from the producers. Nice work.

You'll really dig this movie, I did!
Cool indie flicks are hard to find so it was great to discover this gem. If you're into the fantasy genre you will certainly dig this movie.

Worst movie I have ever tried to watch!
Concept was good, but execution was HORRIBLE! You could really see this was a first time effort at filmaking! Needless to say the students that got together to throw this together failed the class! Seriously, this was so bad I couldn't force myself to watch it all!

The Celebration Bellydance Workout: Mood-Lifting Bellydance Flow & Workout

Sarah Does It Again
ITEMS NEEDED:
Heavily Padded Mat
Knee Pads (If you have bad knees)
Balancing tray (optional)

PRECAUTION: If you have lower back or knee problems, please be cautious with the Muscle Conditioning Section

Sarah does a great job of explaining movement and terminology. If you are a beginner, some sections may be challenging if you are not yet familiar with myas, upward figure 8's, and yoga practices. Sarah does a great job with the conditioning portion. I must say, she stepped it up. I really love that she is taking more time to stretch the neck and back. She also incorporates new moves that aren't repeats from other workouts.

The program was not quite as upbeat as I anticipated (due to the title), but overall, it's a workout that I will keep in my library. I must say that although she used props(canes, and trays)she does not explain in detail the correct way to utilize them which I thought was quite odd.

MUSCLE CONDITIONING...

indeed moodlifting - one of the best exercise titles from WDNY
I recently ordered this DVD to add to my "dance-exercise" collection. What differentiates The Celebration Bellydance Workout from other titles from the same publisher? A lot. First, in many cases, traditional music is used.

Secondly, it has a focus on folkloric dances! There are several sections to this dance, including slow circles and hand articulations, circles, floorwork, Zeffa and Saidi - the last two being the folkloric dances. Of course you don't need a cane or a balancing prop to do the workout, but if you have one, you can give yourself an extra challenge. If you're up for learning some new Saidi movements, the Zeffa rhythm, or floorwork, then this DVD offers all that in small tidbits. You would

This DVD actually contains TWO workouts. First you have the 30 minute dance workout, which I was amazed to see is actually done as a troupe choreography in the Performance section of the DVD. It looked unexpectedly great, since usually exercise...

Simply beautiful....
A well conditioned body is relative to a skilled dancer and essential to any beginner who wishes to improve style and technique in dance. Work outs that incorporate, yoga, belly dance, belly dance floor work immediately intrigue me, so I was eager to begin this program. This program is rich in elements that will surely enhance the dance experience as well as tone the body, which for many, is a particular goal.

The Celebration Workout Program is divided into the following sections:

Celebration workout (with and without voice cues): A lovely upper and lower body flow with feathery hand flourishes, hip shimmies in several variations, a very relaxing cool down. This section works the arms, back and the hips beginning in a gentle flow but get ready for challenges in the shimmy section and then on to the mayas with level changes. Lovely side planks layered with undulations to these are a sensational full body workout.

Cocktail (2012) [Blu Ray] - (Hindi Movie / Bollywood Film / Indian Cinema) [Blu-ray]

COCKTAIL.....SAW IT AT THE THEATER. GREAT MOVIE;
I'm never sure where the editorial reviews that are posted for these movies come from . The one listed above wasn't even close to the plot of this film. Johnny Carson's dead ghost The Amazing Carnac could of gotten closer then the description they gave.

Deepika is the rich wild child , the emotionally raw Veronica. She's flash and cash all the way but has a soft spot under her party girl facade . One night she runs into a bathroom after boozing it up too much and happens to meet a beautiful traditional Hindi girl Meera (Diana) who's crying her eyes out. She just found out that the arranged marriage she thought she was part of was real only on paper and she has been victimized by a total rat (extended cameo in two sections of the movie played by Randeep Hooda) . The marriage was a sham hoax. When she showed up in London because he didn't send for her , she finds he married her for her dowry money . He tells her to get lost she can file for married visa and he will divorce...

Miscast
I love Saif Ali Kahn's acting, when he is cast in the right role. However, Bollywood has a bad habit of casting men of Saif's age (42) in roles as much younger men. Saif's character is supposed to be a carefree 32, but even though he is a great looking guy, he doesn't look to be in his early thirties. The problem is that there really aren't a whole slew of actresses in Bollywood who are Saif's age. The ones with whom he worked and with whom he had great chemistry haven't been seen in awhile- Preety Zinta, etc. It seems that once they get into their thirties, they drop off the radar and younger, newer, pretties fill their spaces. The only one who is still active, that I know of is Divya Balan. As for the actors, they stick around into their sixties. It's a shame really because Preety Zinta, Rani Mukerjee, and Ajay Devgan's wife (her name escapes me now) were a joy to watch. With no one in their age group, these guys must play younger dudes. What is supposed to be carefree and...

Great
It is a very contemporary movie. Up to date. Great performance from every actor. I like the chemistry between Deepika and Saif in all the movies they have made. I like the songs.

FDR: American Badass

Great movie you have to see it.
FDR: American Badass! is an instant classic (cult classic but still a classic). Barry Bostwick plays an enormously funny FDR that was stricken with Polio when he was bit by a werewolf. This movie has an amazing cast, Kevin Sorbo as a pot smoking Abe Lincoln is just a great addition to an already laugh fun filled movie. If you haven't seen this movie yet you are missing out. Rent or buy you will not be disappointed.

Spend your money on this immediately.
I haven't laughed this hard since I was a little kid. Seriously, my abs were hurting. I absolutely recommend this movie, unless you aren't a fan of PURE JOY.

Hilarious film, campy on purpose
It's crude and it's not the highest budget film in the world, but this movie is exactly what you would want it to be - a campy but hilarious film about a historical figure hunting werewolves. If you go into it knowing that, you can enjoy it.

Dawn Rider

THE DOUBLE CROSS
1883. Montana, Wyoming, Dakotas.

Christian Slater stars as "Cincinnati" John Mason, a man wanted for murder in Missouri. Donald Sutherland plays a marshal hunting him down. Meanwhile, there is a group of hooded bandits robbing stage coaches and the mail. We, the audience, know the identity of the bandits, while John tries to figure it out because they shot and killed his father. John has a love interest in Alice (Jill Hennessy) and whiskey.

The movie is supposed to be a remake of the 1935 John Wayne film, which somehow I missed. I found Slater to lack the charisma and toughness to play a cowboy. While not terrible, he was unconvincing. The soundtrack was cowboy cliche with all the bells and whistles (literally) that we have come to watch in modern spoofs. The movie has slow moving sequences of long drawn out dialouge with frequent pauses for the characters to take a long breath or a swig of whiskey. Once the film gets about half way through it picks up and even...

Classic Southerland & Slater, hard but hot Hennessy!
I have not seen John Waynes' movie of the same name. However, this movie was very entertaining and enjoyable. I've always liked Slater and Southerland, and in this one they did not let me down. My big shock was Jill Hennessy (Crossing Jordan). She is the most engaging that I have ever seen her! Good western with plenty of gun play, good scenery, good acting and a good story. If you like westerns, give this one a try. No nudity, violence, blood, no gore, sexual situations and an ending you probably won't see coming. Unless a reviewer spoils it. Southerland is a marshall/ pinkerton hunting Slater, so he can get the large bounty. Slater is an exlawman staying a step ahead of Southerland. Along the way, alot of things happen both good and bad and the story gets real interesting. I lost count of the number of shootings in this movie, but it is alright as I was having a good time watching it.

Surviving Progress

Every Time History Repeats Itself, The Price Goes Up: Interesting Approach, But Very Broad Topic
In the new documentary "Surviving Progress," once again we learn that man is his own worst enemy. It's an oft-told tale, but one that holds true as we look at the results surrounding us every day. With glimpses of social turmoil, economic upheaval, and ecological devastation--the movie (at only 87 minutes) really veers all over the place. In this structure, many interesting topics are introduced but nothing is dissected in much depth. That is both one of the picture's strengths and one of its weaknesses. I absolutely won't fault the ambitious scope of the film which certainly gives one much to ponder. Some of the focal points were quite familiar, while some were not. But all were easily worth revisiting (or visiting for the first time). It's a compelling argument that not all perceived advances are really worth the toll they are taking on the world. And this documentary examines some examples from around the globe.

A number of familiar figures populate "Surviving Progress"...

World in crisis 101
This is one of what has become a genre of films reflecting upon the crossroads looming up for mankind and the beautiful blue marble we call home. This particular entry takes a broad rather than deep approach. It serves as an interesting and thoughtful overture to understanding the slow motion pit of social, financial, and economic quicksand we are sinking deeper into year after year. It also serves as as a refresher course for those who have been educating themselves on this topic through film, reading, and other means. Some of the highlights of this production are:

> That the human brain has not evolved much for the last 50,000 years, and as a result human beings still think in terms of short term needs fulfillment

> That the unending drive toward "progress" can be self-defeating in the end

> The danger posed from further depleting the "capitol" reserves provided by nature (water, air, natural resources, etc.)

> How debt grows more rapidly...

Very, very eye opening.
I have been thinking about the topics in this film for several years now, and my brother told me about this movie, he watched it on Netflix I believe.

I wish that everyone in the world could see this movie, and totally understand what rampant consumerism and greed is doing to our planet, then maybe we could force the wall street bankers and economists to change the way we value, but like Vaclav Smil said, what do we do?

"I’m inoculated against any doctrinaire, grand solutions, saying, you know: this is the pattern, this is the master, this is the paradigm which we have to follow..."
-Vaclav Smil global energy expert

How can we reach people and let them know about what WILL happen if things continue as they are now? I have no clue. All I can do is live life here on earth in the most sustainable way possible, I owe it to the future, even though I have no children and hence no real stake in the future, but just for man kind's sake and...

The Holy Roller

What a novel way....
I sat and watched this DVD wondering why on earth I ever spent the money I did on it and why, at the time, I was spending any time watching it. It took a while, but I discovered the "novel" characters and plot of this movie were strange, a little weird, off-track, human in oh, so many ways and interesting ...all rolled into one.

This is not the typical DVD that I'd normally watch. But, I am so glad I did. I stepped out of my box and learned about my faith, other's faith and perceptions and dogmas, and world views.

It's not a master-piece but it sure is worth watching several times, every so often. I do indeed like this movie.

Asylum Blackout

Thriling,creepy scary,riveting!
I felt the film was unique in the horror sub genre.it was creepy..the atmosphere and the story was a great cinematic experience!

Trapped Inside the Asylum
[BEWARE: The following review of "The Asylum Blackout" contains minor spoilers.]

The title tells everything about the story. Well, apparently. In "Asylum Blackout" (aka "The Incident") George, an aspiring rock musician (Rupert Evans), is seen working as a cook at the Sans Asylum. One night, while working at the asylum's kitchen with his friends and band members Max (Kenny Doughty) and Ricky (Joseph Kennedy), there is a power failure due to a storm, and they are trapped inside the facilities with the inmates, who start attacking the guards.

Director Alexandre Courtès (his feature debut) takes time in setting up the character of George - serious-minded and short of sleep - and does it very well. George is very tired and clearly needs a rest, while the story unfolds from his viewpoint. George says the riot is instigated by a certain inmate, but is it true?

"Asylum Blackout" has a few violent and gory torture scenes, but as the film's bizarre...

"Asylum Blackout" Serves Up Tasty Cinematic Treat
George and his fellow bad members pick up small gigs at night, while working at the asylum during the day. As cooks fot the criminaly insane, it is their job to prepare and serve the food for the inmates. With a less than ideal job, the group is hoping to make it big sometime soon and leave the asylum for good. Unfortunatly for them, the inmates have other ideas.

As a giant thunderstorm rolls through the town, the power at the asylum goes out. The lights don't turn on, the security doors are useless and the phones are dead. Reluctant at first, the cooks decide to restore order and bring the wandering inmates back to their cells. George and his friends soon realize the inmates my be insane, but they are not stupid. With an almost methodical plan of attack, the prisoners slowly begin to take over the darkened asylum. Armed with whatever they can find, the criminaly insane hunt down the gaurds and cooks, all while inflicting some serious pain.

Un Giorno Di Regno

Delightful!
Many of you, gentle readers, are familiar with the sad background of this "melodramma giocoso"; in the space of 8 months, Verdi lost both his infant children and his wife to illness and death. Combined with a lackluster performance by two of his principal singers, who sang in muted tones to preserve their voices, and a libretto which Verdi styles the "least bad" of those offered to him, the opera was a flop! It had three more performances in the 19th century. A change in public taste away from this form of opera in favor of the dramatic tragedy almost certainly was a contributing factor.

But yet ...

This recording is the first chance we have had to see and hear this opera and judge it on its own merits. Phillips issued a CD version years ago as part of their offering of all the early Verdi operas, which had gleaned scant attention in over 100 years. As evidenced by the five star rating above, I think that the folks at the Teatro Regio di Parma did a bang up job...

A real treat!
I have to admit that the cover photo of a woman in a state of hot pink undress nearly put me off buying this DVD. I took one glance and dismissed it as more Eurotrash. However, I was sufficiently curious to check every now and then to see when a review had been posted. I was pleased to read that Mr. Gleeson, in his review, described the production as "refreshingly traditional." I agree with that as with all other points of his review. It is such a treat to see an opera staged in a manner that composer and librettist would recognize as, and admit to being, their own creation, and not the production of some pompous idiot who shows contempt for composer, librettist and audience alike. In this case, the production does exactly what it should do: it tells a story, and in a way that's interesting, engaging, and (dare I say it) charming.

The cast are uniformly excellent. The only name I recognized was that of Anna Caterina Antonacci whom I associate with serious roles...

Excelent singers, wanderful mise en scene
An unknown Verdí, funny, romántic, great músic. Helps You to understand how Rossinis influence was useful but overpassed. The production id beutiful and elegant. Singers havre Excelent voces and at the same time are great actors, with humor and intellligence. A wanderful experience.

Born Fighting

Well Worth the Wait!
Several times I have watched this documentary on the Smithsonian Channel and each time I knew that whenever it became available, I would purchase it. I have the book written by Mr. Webb and now with the DVD, I can show my grandchildren what kind of people the Scotch-Irish were and are today. I am pleased to number myself in that group and recommend this DVD to everyone who has an interest in these people. Their contributions to the world stage were remarkable and the effect they had on American History is laudable. Until I saw this, I really did not appreciate what it meant to be Scotch-Irish.

Incredible!
This is one of the most informative historical videos I have ever seen in my life. I watched a copy of it one night on Youtube and could not stop watching it. It answers so many questions about the making of America by my people, the Scots-Irish. I am pre-ordering it immediately.

Good stuff
Sen. Webb's "Born Fighting" is good history - a part of our culture
ignored by most historians, yet such an important part of our history, and still a very big part of who we are. High marks.

Make Room for Daddy: Season 6

The New, Improved "Daddy"
Running from 1953 to 1964, "Make Room for Daddy" a/k/a "The Danny Thomas Show," was one of the key situation comedies from television's golden age, chronicling the humorous experiences in the life of nightclub entertainer Danny Williams (Danny Thomas) and his family. The show went through several distinct changes. From 1953 to 1956, Jean Hagen played Danny's wife Margaret, and Danny's children, Rusty and Terry, were respectively portrayed by Rusty Hamer and Sherry Jackson. Hagen left the show after the conclusion of the 1955-56 season and, for the 1956-57 season, Williams was a widower. For the 1957-58 season, Marjorie Lord joined the cast as Williams' second wife Kathy, who brought along her daughter Linda (Angela Cartwright) into the new family. By the beginning of the 1958-59 season (the 6th season, which this DVD set covers), Sherry Jackson's character was phased out of the principal cast and the show would continue with the regular lineup of Thomas, Lord, Hamer and...

One of the Best TV Box Sets Ever
Questar released Season Five of this landmark series with chopped up syndicated episodes and even the syndicated opening credits. It was awful.

My hope is that S'More is giving us the complete episodes with the original titles!

If so, my five star review will stand.

Folks, I got the set today - the review stands. This is a terrific set. It is more than expected and leaves a lot of other TV series collections in the dust. At last this series, which was the bridge between "I Love Lucy" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show" is available as it should be seen for those who loved it then - and for those who will discover it anew.

The sad Season Five had edited syndication versions of the show with the syndication titles. This set has the original titles at the beginning of each episode and the episodes are full length. If you were disappointed in Season Five, don't let that keep you from buying Season Six. It's a whole new ball game.

All...

A Great Set For A Great Series!
Given the almost four year timeframe between this set and the Season 5 set, there was much concern whether "Make Room For Daddy" would even see a Season 6 release. Questar (the studio behind the previous set) caught a lot of heat from consumers over the syndicated episodes used for the Season 5 set. Purification

very well done
I'm not an indie horror fan at all. But once in a while I take a chance. Purification was a pleasant surprise! Kept me guessing from beginning to the end. Well done!

Purification
Bret Fitzpatrick is a self-absorbed businessman who is thrust into a nightmarish realm between dreams and reality, where the demons of his past return to haunt him. Director Joe Ciminera ushers in the JACOB'S LADDER of Independent cinema in PURIFICATION, a redemption tale that bends the edges of reality. PURIFICATION is a fresh step up in terms of originality as the director looks to find hope and meaning amongst the horror. Ciminera stands out against the rest of the cast with an strong performance in the lead. The same cannot be said for many of the side characters, unfortunately, who either overact or underplay their respective roles. While the overall theme becomes quite apparent from the very beginning, PURIFICATION lacks a steady sense of continuity between events to drive the narrative. It often feels disjointed and incidental as a result, although this can add to the dream logic of the plot. With some revision and reworking, PURIFICATION could stand to be a much more powerful...

People with three-digit IQs will be talking about "Purification" years from now.
Superb! I'm NOT a low budget indie horror fan, but this movie is EXCEPTIONAL. Don't read spoilers, just watch this gripping, well-written, well-directed and reasonably well-acted little mini-masterpiece. People with three-digit IQs will be talking about "Purification" years from now.

Cheeky! [Blu-ray]

Venetians head to London!
Have you ever bought a DVD that delivered EXACTLY what you were expecting? It's a good feeling, huh? Well, that's what CHEEKY did for me. I bought it for a surplus of nudity, and that's what I got! In addition, the movie is also a lot of fun and has some comical scenes in it.

Yuliya Mayarchuk is absolutely stunning as the main character (Carla). She travels from Italy to London where she plans to wait for her boyfriend to arrive. Along the way, some mis-understandings lead to a thrill ride of sexual mis-adventures. Mayarchuk is nude thru most of the movie, which is just fine w/me. Sometimes there's no particular reason for her to be naked, but she is anyway. That's just fine w/me too! She is absolutely adorable.

In this day & age when it seems like the whole world is falling apart, DVDs like CHEEKY are extra-important as they form an avenue of escapism. If you want a movie that is full of mindless fun and lots of gorgeous naked women, then this one...

Cheeky - Erotica from the Master - Tinto Brass
Cheeky, released in Europe by the name Trasgredire, is a good name for this farcical romp because there is a strong emphasis on cheeks. Women's that is and not the facial kind.

The feature opens with our heroine(?), Carla (Yuliya Mayarchuk) briskly strolling though Hyde Park, observing amorous couples in various states of passion, (something I seem to miss on my jaunts through a park) when a typical flasher opens his trench coat and exhibits his faux penis to Carla. Was she shocked? Did she run? No, she smiled and lifted up her flimsy miniskirt and a flashed her beaver back at him. In a way it was funny as it was meant to be but it gives you an idea about the inanity of the movie.

The Plot

Carla has moved from her home of Italy, for some undisclosed reason, to London. Her boyfriend Matteo (Jarno Berardi) is supposed to join her and she needs to find somewhere to live. She encounters a real estate agent named Moira (Francesca Nunzi) a lesbian who...

Uneven film, very erotic at times, but flawed nonetheless
Director Tinto Brass has a very real admiration for the female behind which makes his films enjoyable to watch if you share this attraction. And in this particular film he adds a girl-pursues-girl element which I especially enjoyed!

Basically, the plot centers around beautiful blonde Carla (Yuliya Mayarchuk) who moves to London and needs to find a place to stay. Sexy older woman Moira (Francesca Nunzi) develops an immediate attraction for the pretty younger girl and seduces her. This was nice, but I thought the groping was somewhat clumsier than it needed to be. There were several brief scenes involving Carla and Moira, and they were the best parts of this film.

The rest of the plotline was mostly forgettable. The Italian-to-English dubbing was so-so at best. I only wish Tinto Brass directed more scenes involving women seducing other women.

Blood Drinkers

could be crazier
The first few minutes of this flick give you an idea of where you're headed. Some great mist-enshrouded tombs, a great gang of villains (a bald vampire and his slinky bride, both wearing dark glasses, a dwarf, a hunchback and an old lady) and some startling monochrome cinematography are on the plus side. On the minus is some really dopey dialogue, lots of wasted shots of people staring at each other, and clumsy editing that leaves you totally confused as to who is who and what the heck is going on. There's a bizarre music interlude as a gang of guys serenade a woman who we think is the main actress, only she gets bumped off in an unexpolained attack a couple of minutes later. After all of this confusion, we move into the story proper, that has the feeling that they made stuff up as they went along, as nothing seems to flow narratively. OK. I wasn't expecting Citizen Kane here. But I think the big flaw in this film is that it takes itself too seriously. It needed to have the same crazy...

BLOOD DRINKERS EDITED?????
I saw this movie as a child at the drive-in theater with my parents. The scenes of gore as necks were hacked by the sharp gleaming fangs of the undead left an indeleble mark upon me as a child. I recently purchased a copy of the DVD and was shocked to find out that all of the gorey scenes were edited out!!! Why??? This was what made this vampire flick far ahead of it's time. If anyone knows why this is so, please e-mail me. I'd love to get a copy that hasn't been "cut up" so to speak!

The Blood Drinkers (aka The Vampire People)
One of the better Filipino horror films from the 1960s. A family is sort of kept under a vampire's fangish control while he makes it his death's work to revive his lost love. Meanwhile his vampiric servants keep putting the bite on the local populace. Ronald Remy is compelling as the head vampire. The colors are beautiful but sort of confusing as the keep changing tone according to mood and whatever is going on. The DVD transfer is great. This version is the one to get. Recommended to fans of this genre.

Del Shores: Sordid Confessions

Politically-incorrect Southern standup from gay humorist.
Del Shores, the amusing mind behind "Sordid Lives" and a staff writer on "Queer As Folk", films a stand-up performance in Dallas, during which he presents his extremely politically-incorrect take on current events, pop culture, gay activism, sexual fettishes, and the uniqueness of Southern charm. From Snooki to Bristol Palin, from Waffle House waitresses to a "little person" male stripper, and from trailer trash sluts to feedback on his Facebook page, Shores is not shy about sharing his thoughts with a very receptive hometown audience, where he is clearly in his element.

His stories are creative, and his delivery is good, but this is best enjoyed by current fans of this Southern humorist. I'm not a prude, but I have a problem with "F*** You" as a common punchline in his stories, and, if you feel the same, this may not be for you. With those caveats in mind, I'll give it four stars out of five, for those open to his humor. Your mileage may vary.

You will laugh till you pee and the whole house will say AMEN !!!!!!
If you love sordid lives, the series daddies dyen who's got the will, sordid lives the movie. This is a must
When Del has his turn the so call righteous run for the hills.

Another Life

Vivid imagination
A terrific dramatisation of the Thompson - Bywaters Case of 1922 - 23. Edith Thompson was portrayed as an imaginative young woman, who whilst having an affair, wrote her lover letters about ways to poison her husband so that they could be together. When the Edwardian court took hold of these letters, they used them to condemn her to hang after Frederick Bywaters, her lover actually did stab Edith's husband to death. I would recommend viewing whole heartedly!

''''''''''''''B movie
I ordered this movie because I enjoyed Ioan Gruffudd so much in Horatio Hornblower. But this movie, Another Life,. was downright vulgar with all the graphic sex scenes. The story line was shallow and sleezy. I gave it away. I was disappointed in Ioan's poor choice for this project.

A Really Good Tragedy!
A free spirited girl marries the wrong man and that leads to scandal and then murder. This is an intense drama of a true story.

Girl O' My Dreams

A Nice Oddity
I'm the first to admit that I like strange little old movies. I tend to shy away from the classics and seek out odd little genre films. This one certainly qualifies. It has lon chaney jr as a high school dude trying to win the big game in order to win the heart of a girl he likes. What makes it interesting is putting a classic horror movie actor into this role. It changes the whole dynamic of hte film and turns what could have been pedestrian into something wonderful.

Lon Cheny Jr In A High School Romance
This is one of the strangest and sweetest movies I've seen in a while. It has Lon Cheny Jr - the guy who played The Wolfman - as a high school athelete with a crush on a girl. He also needs to win the big game (of course) while finding a way to romance his lady. There are many funny moments, but I watched it to see the big kiss at the end. It plays like many modern high school romances, but doesn't talk about sex and is much more family friendly than most.

excellent example of McCarey's skills.
"This is one movie for the whole family. Lighthearted and entertaining, it reminds me of my college days, when life on the campus was simple and full of wholesome fun. I enjoyed it and I know that everybody who treasures his or her undergrad days will be entertained as well."

Fog and Crimes: Series 2

Soneri is back: cranky but good!
Series 2 confirms all the highs and lows of series 1 (please see my other review), but with a few differences. This time, the relationship between Soneri and lawyer Cornelio is mostly strained and confrontational. Cornelio's fiercely independent and secretive nature rubs Soneri's suspicious, dominant personality the wrong way. While still being a dedicated, brilliant detective, Soneri is often cranky and frustrated as his cases seem to take a toll on him. The prospect of him moving to Rome to head an anti-terrorist squad comes up in each episode and is quite tiresome: why not wait until the last two or three episodes to hint that the series as we know it is about to end? Go figure. But when all is said and done, all the good things I loved about series 1 are still there and I can't help but clap my hands and exclaim: Bravo!

Foggy characters, foggy town
I enjoy all of the international mysteries on MHZ, and have sampled most of them. Soneri's character is a believable, dedicated investigator, but his relationship to Angela, his lawyer girlfriend, leaves me cold. I hope he eventually terminates their relationship and moves to Rome where he will be facing the challenges of running a counterterrorism department. The writers could work more on developing the characters around Soneri, such as the forensics doctor, his superior, and his assistant. The rest all seem to blend into the background of fog. Is there really that much fog in Ferrara?
Despite my obvious criticisms, I woud still watch all of the series, as the stories are very unpredictable and interesting. The scenery is great, and the main character, Franco Soneri is wonderful.

Even better than series 1
So far, I have watched only three of the six episodes. It is even better than series 1: interesting plots, very good actors, beautiful views of Ferrara and the Po. Note also: The protagonists' private life does not interfere with the investigation (no sex scenes); there is no gratuitous violence (murders of course, but not on-screen); and the dialogue is in good standard Italian (no bad language, no slang) with good sound. Great entertainment that children can watch too!

Delicacy [Blu-ray]

A French Charmer About Finding Love When You Least Expect It
The infectious Audrey Tautou takes center stage in this charming French confection about love in its various configurations. Ever since "Amelie," I've been enchanted with Tautou. She is so likable and natural with an intriguing ease on screen. It's almost impossible not to relate to her in some manner, and I think this appeal can sometimes overshadow her talent. And she is a true talent, she just makes it look simple. She goes through a strong character arc in "Delicacy" and is absolutely terrific. From contentment, to loss and withdrawal, to romantic rebirth--Tautou experiences much in this film filled with both melancholy and hope. Billed as a whimsical romantic comedy, I wouldn't discount this movie as merely frothy entertainment (although it surely is). There is a truth and poignancy at the heart of "Delicacy" that really resonates. This isn't pure fantasy. There are real life situations, genuine heart, and a surprising depth beneath the sweet exterior. And I, for one,...

Love souffle
"I could go on holiday in your hair," moons a love struck Swede named Markus (Francois Damiens) to his co-worker, a beautiful French widow named Nathalie. If that sounds like an inappropriate comment to make at the office (to your boss, no less), you're right. Then again, it's not every day that your boss (bearing a remarkable likeness to Audrey Tautou) calls you into her office, springs from her chair without warning, plants a lingering, passionate smooch, then goes back to her desk as if nothing just happened. It's an anomaly that a slovenly nebbish like Markus is going to require a few days to process.

Whether or not you believe that a beautiful young widow who bears a remarkable likeness to Audrey Tautou would even consider throwing herself at a slovenly nebbish who bears a remarkable likeness to a French Chris Elliot is probably a good litmus test for whether or not you will be willing to sit through a romantic dramedy called "Delicacy", directed by siblings David and...

A funny, sad, lovely film by Audrey Tautou.
This film has so many facets- it is not your average rom com or your average Audrey Tautou film. This movie is uplifting, sad, happy, witty, brilliant, awkward, and lovely. A few scenes will require a tissue box handy, such as when Tautou's character goes dancing at a club with her friend (I know it sounds odd). This movie brings you down to the level of a grief-stricken person and takes you along her journey to recovery, to laughter, and to love. Enjoy.

Broadway Limited

Cute, but nothing special
This little comedy churned out in 1941 takes place on the Pennsylvania Railroad's famous "Broadway Limited." The thin plot revolves around a Hollywood actess travelling with her "adopted" baby as a publicity stunt. The twist is that baby may or may not be kidnapped. The character performances of Patsy Kelly and Leonid Kinsky keep the whole thing bearable.

Train buffs will like the interior and exterior shots of the famed "Broadway Limited" and its Raymond Loewy-designed locomotives and passenger cars (and there are plenty).

The DVD recording, on the other hand, leaves plenty to be desired and the "RE" logo floating in the corner for the full length of the DVD is positively infuriating.

Buy it if you like the train, otherwise pass it by!

Old Timers Young
Zazu Pitts looks so fresh and young. Patsy Kelly also looks young. Dennis O'Keefe here looks like a young Dr. Kildare or Richard Chamberlain, and he plays a doctor in this movie, too. This is a feel-good movie that's meant to make you smile with fresh-faced actors and actresses. Victor McLaglen plays a very charming tough guy. This is a three-star story with four-star performances.

Train Lovers
Interesting story line, but this movie is perfect for fans of the PRR. Many interior shots of the Broadway Limited, as well as exterior views of the cars and engines.

Ring Without Words

A most enjoyable Ring Without Words perfect for non-purists especially!
Lorin Maazel considered requests to create a synthesis of Wagner's Ring cycle as a continuous `Ring without Words' twice before finally agreeing to the request made by the recording company, Telarc, in 1987. The resultant 75 minute recording proved to be a big seller and in Maazel's opinion it helped to create a new audience for the operas.

In creating this continuous synthesis Maazel attempted to produce a reduced version which followed strict chronological order and which introduced all the main themes and motifs without adding a single note not written by Wagner. In this he reinforced Wieland Wagner's view (Wagner's Grandson) that the essence of the work lies in the orchestral score.

Weiland Wagner's view is worth considering in this context and can be quoted as stated to Maazel at a rehearsal of the Ring as `The orchestra, that's where it all is - the text behind the text, the universal subconscious that binds Wagner's personae one to another and to the...

Melodic Synopsis of the Ring Soars
Whenever a great work is summarized, or truncated, the serious reader or listener is skeptical. The Ring in its glorious 16 hour stretch is a feast for the converted, but often is too much for a beginner trying to grapple with a large and complex cultural monument. The Berlin Philharmonic under the direction of Lorin Maazel plays direct quotes from the Ring that are lifted from the orchestral score of the four operas in the order in which Wagner composed them. The result is a highly organic presentation of the major leitmotifs and important orchestral interludes of the Ring. As such it is an important achievement which will help in promoting The Ring and winning for it a new generation of admirers.

I appreciate the fact that Maazel in stitching the excerpts together did not alter anything that Wagner wrote, nor did he add any superfluous material.

The result is a compelling sonic introduction to the musical building blocks of The Ring. I would have added...

Ravishingly beautiful
Wagner's Ring "without words" is not a novel concept: Stokowski and some of his fellow-conductors have performed orchestral "syntheses" of Wagner operas, especially during the 1960s and later. There is nothing sacrilegious about orchestral excerpts from operas, though some critics have sneered at the so-called "bleeding chunks". Orchestral excerpts and syntheses will particularly please those who, for one reason or another, have trouble sitting through these endless operas - especially when they are celebrated on consecrated ground in Bayreuth. Maazel and the Berliner Philharmoniker (in huge complement) have recorded this performance in 2000 in the Berlin Philharmonie in excellent video and audio. It is a 78-minute tour de force, for the then 70-year old conductor as well as for the musicians who follow him on the beat and who often have to play grueling long fffs or harmonically challenging passages. In brief: they all work a small miracle, and the performance turns out to be...

Eating Raoul (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]

"Tasty Comedy of Bad Manners" Gets a Mediocre DVD Treatment
The 1982 low-budget outré comedy EATING RAOUL from writer/director Paul Bartel, who also stars, is an outrageously funny satire that needles such diverse elements of American culture as the concept of The American Dream, high-society status symbols, overzealous capitalism, racial stereotyping, and sexually deviant subgroups.

Paul and Mary Bland (Bartel and Mary Woronov) are a conservative, happily married middle-class couple who share an interest in fine wine, good food, and sexual repression. They also share entrepreneurial dreams of opening their own restaurant for epicures. Unfortunately, the Blands are flat broke. Paul is an unemployed wine connoisseur, and Mary only makes a pittance working as a Nurse's Aide. To make matters worse, the building they want to purchase for their restaurant has also caught the eye of another buyer, so if Paul and Mary don't raise the $20,000 down quickly, they'll watch their hopes and dreams turn to dust.

Things actually take a turn for...

Great movie, horrible DVD
Talk about cult classics! Paul Bartel's darkly hilarious "Eating Raoul" was the first cult film I ever saw, way back in the early 1980s when the miracle that is cable television arrived at the house. I sat in openmouthed wonder as the movie unfolded, barely believing my eyes were seeing the twisted hijinks floating by onscreen. It's largely due to "Eating Raoul" that I became a Mary Woronov fan, and I also learned to appreciate as well as seek out any films made by Paul Bartel. He's an interesting guy, a man that looks like one of your balding uncles or an out of shape next-door neighbor, but he has a warped sense of humor that fits in well with 1970s low budget cinema. Audiences probably know Bartel, if they know him at all, for several films he made for Roger Corman in the 1970s: "Death Race 2000" and "Cannonball." These two films couldn't be more different in subject matter and tone than "Eating Raoul." The two Corman films deal with car races, crashes, and bloody violence. "Eating...

AVOID: Bad Transfer
This long awaited DVD is an incredible disappointment. The major problem that makes this unwatchable is that somehow this movie has been stretched horizontally to fit a widescreen TV. The result makes everything look distorted. I don't know what the original aspect ratio was but this presentation is an abomination. I tried running it on my computer software to manually adjust the picture dimensions. The film does appear to be wider than the standard screen size but not the ratio as presented on this DVD.

And to top it off the print appears to be something of the VHS quality (i.e. poor) with color and resolution deficiences. There appears to be a gash in the screen as if the video was shot from a movie screen with a tear in the top middle. The sound appears to have been mono that someone has doctored up by added fake stereo and reverb, then steering the dialog from side to side. Warning: Listening to this may cause sea sickness.

Sony should be sued for selling this junk. I...

Delightful movie. Johnny Messner as the Doctor was convincing in his role. You never know how the movie is going to end-even though you know how these movies end-until it does.

Kristen Ruhlin is a name to watch
Kristen Ruhlin, the star of this movie opposite Josh Gadd, reminds me of Audrey Hepburn in her looks and talent. I can see her appearing in Vogue and becoming a major figure on the movie scene before too long. I had the pleasure of working with her when she was first starting out and found her a joy to work with; one of the nicest and most considerate people I have ever met. This is another quality she shares with the late Audrey Hepburn: thorough professionalism and an exceptional ability to work well with other people. Like Hepburn, she never wears her ego on her sleeve. In a profession notorious for bad behavior and artificial attitudes, she is a genuine talent who saves all the drama for her on screen performances.

Just can't get enough
I have been playing the Action Words DVD for my daughter Scarlett since she was only about 2 months old. She watches this everyday. I didn't realize just how much she was into these until one day when the theme song came on and she went flying across the house to see the TV and jump up and down in her walker. It is the cutest thing ever! She gets all into the DVD and even talks back. I love how at only 8 months these amazing videos stimulate her so much. I took a video of her running towards the TV in her walker. Wish I could show you how she just can't get enough of Monki See! Great products!!!

Cute DVD!
I really like this DVD. It is so cute! My kids love Howie and Skip, and of course the host Olivia. Olivia is charming, she encourages the kids watching to join them in whatever action they are doing. My daughter really likes Olivia, while my sons relate more to Howie and Skip. The theme song is great. It is very repetitive, and is easy for the little ones to sing. I think that this DVD was a great buy, and I look forward to more MonkiSee DVDs! [...]

Thunderball (50th Anniversary Repackage) [Blu-ray]

This is what Bond is all about! Clearly the best Bond film in the franchise!
I noted that this is the only Bond film of the entire series that, to date, has not received a single 1-star review here on Amazon. That's pretty dang good!

Director Terrence Young had introduced us to Bond in DR. NO and FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE. Guy Hamilton then took us down the GOLDFINGER road, and while his attention to action made that the first SMASH Bond film, he also seemed to lose alot of the more down-to-earth flavor that made the first two Bonds so much better.

But, Terrence Young returned for his final Bond film, and somehow managed to provide the perfect mesh of the realistic Bond from the first two films, and the more action-oriented Bond of GOLDFINGER. The result is a very happy marriage indeed - it's just too bad there were very few legitimate children born of it!

THUNDERBALL contains all the great locales, villains, and Bond coolness that we love, without getting into the ridiculous, gadget-filled territory of the later films. It...

The Thunderball Phenomenon: Skip the Special Edition for the 2-Disc Ultimate Edition
In the wake of the enormous success of GOLDFINGER, THUNDERBALL became one of the most anticipated films in cinema history. "Bondmania" was at a fever pitch in the 1960s and that lended a certain air of confidence to the cast and crew. By Bond's fourth adventure, everyone was assured of success and everything was done on the largest scale possible. THUNDERBALL is often regarded, along with GOLDFINGER, as one of the better Bond films. It contains all of the elements of a good Bond flick at a time when Bond was not tired or clichéd. Bond's fourth adventure finds him taking to the sea, culminating in some of the most spectacular underwater fight footage ever recorded. And with Terence Young once again taking the director's chair after his temporary hiatus, the audience and the film is in good hands.

After the opening "gun barrel" sequence, re-shot for the first time in widescreen format with Sean Connery playing the part, we are greeted with the opening pre-credits...

Thunderball Rocks!
THUNDERBALL (1965) the fourth of the James Bond 007 series is among the best of the films. As a follow-up to the phenomenally successful and definitive GOLDFINGER, THUNDERBALL is just a shade less satisfying. In terms of tone and composition the two films are of an era in the James Bond mythology.

Sean Connery returns as the inimitable British Secret Agent, this time set against SPECTRE Agent Number Two, Largo (Adolfo Celi). SPECTRE has stolen an atomic bomb and is holding the world hostage.

Largo is a worthy adversary. Strongly-built, silver-haired, wearing an eyepatch, and more physically intimidating than Gert Frobe's plump Goldfinger, Celi's Largo lacks the faintly tongue-in-cheek air which animated Goldfinger's behavior. In fact, the entire film lacks the decidedly humorous undertone of GOLDFINGER. The villains are more vicious, and Connery's Bond, his wit more honed than ever, is playing for keeps.

The theme song (with Tom Jones singing), plot and story...

Detroit Metal City: Complete Collection

Good Series, Funny!
Detroit Metal City is a rapid fire comedy about the rise of the death metal band, DMC to prominence. It is also about the protagonist, Negishi, coping with his placement in a style of music unlike that of what he dreams to perform Scandanavian Pop.

Negishi makes a fool of himself differentiating Krauser from his daily life, often in interference in his romantic aspirations for Yuki; Krauser has crazy antics onstage and with fans, the double lives that DMC fans lead. Most of the story in each episode is focused mainly on the first element, which is a shame, because certain jokes quickly got old after the third episode, and could have had the edge taken off of it by the third element, which went rather unused despite having some very funny moments

The characters are archetypes that aren't found very often in anime, much less comedy, so the use of them especially as main characters is very refreshing. That said, because the show is about Negishi as Krauser, there is...

The Tempest

Wonderful stage adaptation
I had the good fortune to see this very production at Stratford, Ontario, and this video does a wonderful job capturing the feel of the live performance. It was magical on the night: Plummer is outstanding in a difficult role, Caliban pitched just right, the masque of Ceres breathtaking, and the lords a strong supporting cast. I've seen several stage adaptations of this play, and this exceeds them all. I'm delighted to be able to own it on DVD.

Most of these reviews are not for this film!
Just hoping you've noticed that lots of these reviews are for another dvd altogether - Julie Taymor's film starring Helen Mirren. Amazon really needs a policy for differentiating between different releases of the same movie, and different movies with the same title, as this problem arises all the time.

Snake in the Eagle's Shadow

Snake in the Eagle's Shadow
It was good to see that Columbia/TriStar pictures had released the 2 movie dvd edition of Jackie Chan's classics. I watched Snake in the Eagle's Shadow since I was a young boy. I remembered watching it many times. This was back in the early 80s. Now watching it again is a delight.

Though, a very important part of the film was cut. This changed the tone of the film since it is the pivot of the storyline. The story was about how Jackie Chan learned the Snake Style from the old beggar, who is the master of the Snake Style. However, a vicious martial art opponent with an Eagle style was determined to wipe out the Snake Style clan. Chan didn't know this was going, and the old beggar was on the run, to escape from the Eagle Style master. Through the middle part of the story, Chan discovered that the Snake style manual that was left to him was torn apart by his cat. He found his cat trapped in a corner of the room confronted by a cobra snake. In the original film, it actually revealed how...

This is a Must have to be in you Jackie Chan Collection
This movie's story is pretty simple Shang Kwan Yi Mun (Hwang Jang Lee)is the eagle claw master who has decided to wipe out everyone who knows the Snake Fist technique. After having killed almost every snake fist master there is now only one left Pak Cheung Tien (Simon Yuen). But what he doesn't expect is that Pak Cheung Tien will teach the poor orphan boy Chien Fu (Jackie Chan) the snake fist style. Now Chien Fu has to under go some of the most tortuous training ever devised. On the way he also learns another style "the cat's claw" which he learns from a cat that kills a king cobra snake. Chien Fu now decides to combine the snake's fist with the cat's claw to be able to beat Shang Kwan Yi Mun in the final confrontation. This movie is a pretty stunning showcase and the first time Jackie Chan got to show what he is able to perform. Simon Yuen shines as the old snake fist master. Hwang Jang Lee also makes a solid performance as the dreaded eagles claw master. What can I say this movie is...

The Ultimate Jackie Chan Movie
Before I go on I must say that my score is based on a heavy tilt. As a DVD this has nothing to really merit 5 stars in the way of features, extras and the ilk. But you're not buying this movie for features are you? You're buying it because this happens to be one of the finest Kung Fu movies ever made.

There is a plot that revolves around two feuding kung fu schools, the snakefist and the eagle's claw. The eagle's claw has all but won, having successfully killed most of the members of the snakefist. Jackie Chan plays an errand boy working in a small kung-fu school and he happens to come across the last remaining master of the snake fist and provides him out with food and shelter.

That's the plot. Its full of holes but at the same time it is dotted with some hilarious moments, highlighted by excellent fighting scenes, and carried by jackie chan's irresistable charm.

This is old school jackie chan. If you've only seen his new films you will most...

Portlandia: Season 2

LOVE PORTLANDIA
Love Fred.
Love Carrie.
Love Portland.

A silly requirement.

These Kids are Wacky!
I used to live in Portland, kind of get the self-conscious posturing of Portland denizens; kind of phony, but at heart sincere and well-intentioned. Carrie and Fred have nailed the lifestyle-I remember waiting in line for an hour for famous pancakes that supposed to be organic, natural and healthy, but were as dense as corrugated iron. Enjoy the easy-going spoofing and seeing the sites of Portland-it really is a beautiful place.

Still funny but not as good as season one
What I love about this show is there isn't one second that isn't outright silliness.

There is so much comedic creativity here. The two lead characters even do gender reversals with the woman dressed as a man with his girlfriend in her red wig played by the man. And they do it so well including the voices, that it's easy to forget who is whom and just laugh.

The people are all whacky, the situations are all outlandish, and the entire city apparently is off kilter. I can't wait to go there after watching this. While this is extreme craziness I do feel that there is a lot of truth here about how Portland actually is after knowing some charming delightful people from there. I was wondering if it was just this particular group of friends that seemed funnier than people I know on the east coast or what but now I'm thinking it's a funny place in general.

This show keeps the spacey hipster goofiness coming at you non stop. It seems like the initial burst of...

The Samaritan [Blu-ray]

A Contemplative Actioner With A Solid Samuel Jackson Lead: Intriguing, But Falls Short In The Final Act
Anyone anticipating "The Samaritan" to be a high octane thrill ride will probably have those expectations thwarted. Truthfully, I also didn't expect much from this Blu-ray and thought it would be an exercise in conventional action mayhem. It is, however, a movie with a lot more on its mind. "The Samaritan" is a surprisingly contemplative film about redemption and second chances. Featuring a solid Samuel Jackson, the screenplay takes its time in building a genuinely interesting story. Jackson gives one of his more complex performances as a man struggling to create a new life, a new identity, and start afresh. He's great and the movie serves up some terrifically unpleasant surprises (the twist at the half way point is a doozy)! But just as the movie approaches the final act, it falters. An intricate con to swindle a crime lord out of millions of dollars is set up with almost zero preparation and back story. If a clever grift is essential to your screenplay, however, it needs to...

Family ties!
This is a very good movie that will keep you guessing all the way to the end. Samuel L. Jackson performance is outstanding as always. Ruth Negga, a newcomer, is also really good.

Foley (Jackson) gets released from prison after serving 25 years for killing his partner. His partner's son wants revenge. Not the usual kind, a different kind of revenge. Then Iris (Ruth Negga), appears and falls in love with Foley. Everything is slow and for a moment we think is a love story or a back stubbing plot. At the 40 minute mark of the movie the plots gets really twisted and then we start guessing all the way to the end which is a surprise.

Four stars for the decent plot and the acting. Look forward to watch more movies with Ruth Negga. She has a great future in the business.

First rate movie for a great price
This movie is pretty good. It really makes me cringe and keeps me thinking about it days after I've seen it. I recommend it to all adults.

Resident Evil: Damnation (+ UltraViolet Digital Copy) [Blu-ray]

When Things Are Done Right...
Resident Evil: Damnation improves upon the first Resident Evil CG movie, Degeneration, by leaps and bounds! Not only did Capcom tweak the appearances of the characters (and for the better!) when in comparison to the last movie, they also took many demands of the fans to heart. A good part of the appeal of the Resident Evil franchise is its trademark monsters, in which case this feature film does not fail to resurrect some of the most notorious creatures from the more classic games of the series. That does not go to say that they have done away with the new, either. With an interesting blending of creatures, Damnation takes that next step into the future of Resident Evil, teasing you with what is to come a few weeks down the line with Resident Evil 6.

The plot at first may seem difficult to follow, but with Leon Scott Kennedy holding the reigns and Ada Wong throwing him a bone here and there, the story definitely does not disappoint. Between all of the monsters, fighting,...

Nice RE Movie To Watch Until The Release Of The RE6 Game
As you watch the beginning to the ending of the movie it feels like the producers and writers intentionally made the movie as a prequel to the RE6 games storyline but don't let that detract you from the entertaining story that is already in the movie itself. Like on reviewer stated the movie brings into play many of the former monsters and creatures that you see in the games as well as some cameo time with another iconic RE character as well. The CGI Animation is great and the actions is pretty good too. What is almost sadly ironically funny is that some of the fight scenes here are much better then the ones in the live action RE movies. Basically this is a must for any Resident Evil fan or those who like CGI action movies but regardless this is a nice collection to anyone's movie collection and for fans enough to tide us over until the release of RE6.

Does its survival horror roots proud
In one of the special features on the Blu-ray, director Makoto Kamiya says he was aiming for a "Resident Evil 4" Leon and that he wanted to put Leon through hell. That is the perfect way to describe Leon's journey throughout "Damnation." The Las Plagas virus is now being used for war tactics and utilized in ways that have yet to be introduced in the games. What's great is that "Damnation" throws you into the first person perspective and makes you feel like anything can jump out at Leon and attack him at any moment. The renders as well as the computer animation are crisp and fluid at all times, especially the hosts of the Plaga, the Lickers, and the Tyrants. The only time it looks awkward is when people talk for long periods of time. You begin to notice that their facial expressions don't seem as natural as they should be, but it's easy to overlook.

The lighting in the movie really stands out, especially in the basement sequence and whenever Leon picks up a flashlight. It's...
